I have quite a few silver fillings that I would like to replace with the newer white fillings. However, my teeth have also yellowed quite a bit over the years. If I want to get my teeth whitened, do you recommend that I whiten my teeth first or have the fillings done first?
Stella
Dear Stella,
It’s great that you are trying to update your smile. I am going to recommend that you have your teeth whitening done first. This way you can match the composite (white) filling material to the newer color. You would be best served if you allowed the whitened teeth to have about a week for the color to settle before you have the fillings done. Your teeth will continue to whiten for between 1-2 weeks after you stop whitening before it reaches its “final” color.
Sanitary Amalgam Removal
I do want to address the removal of your silver fillings. In dental circles, these are called amalgam fillings because amalgam means a mixture of different elements. The largest ingredient in these type of fillings is actually mercury, not silver. Mercury is a known toxin. While the American Dental Association still considers them safe for use, I would recommend you only have them removed by someone who knows the appropriate procedure for safety reasons.
This has to be done carefully because you do not want to inhale or swallow any of the mercury or mercury vapors. There is a procedure known as a sanitary amalgam procedure. This uses things like a stopper dam among other things to protect you from the mercury as it is being removed and replaced.
While any dentist can do your teeth whitening, I would be cautious as to who you have switch out your fillings. The dentists who are more likely to know this procedure as well as have the materials necessary to do it correctly would be either a mercury-free dentist or a holistic dentist.
