I prefer natural medicine but can’t seem to find a dentist willing to work within my limitations. I have thyroid issues and am trying to avoid metal in any form in my dental work. I’m hoping if I do some research and come up with solutions on my own, they’ll be willing to use them. Do ceramics have any metal in them?
Pamela
Dear Pamela,
If you’re asking whether there are any metals specifically in the ceramic dental work, then the answer is no. However, if you’re asking if there are any metal ions. That’s a different story. The good news is that isn’t the same `as metal. Instead, metal ions are in many everyday things which are necessary for our survival.
Metal Ions in Daily Life
Hemoglobin
The hemoglobin in our blood has iron ions in it. Without those metal ions, you wouldn’t live.
Table Salt
Sodium is a metal. When it is in pure metal form, it is toxic. However, as a metal ion combined with chlorine it is simply table salt. That is also essential to life.
You’re probably familiar with some of these other metal ions which are absolutely essential for you to live:
- Calcium
- Potassium
- Magnesium
- Zinc
- Copper
- Manganese
- Molybdenum
- Cobalt
Metal Free Dental Options
You have several options when it comes to metal-free dentistry. You probably already know about mercury-free fillings. There are also metal-free dental crowns, as well as metal-free dental implants. The point is finding a dentist who is willing to work with you.
I don’t think you’re going to get that with your current dentist. In your place, I’d look for a dentist who already understands metal-free options. They are much more willing to work with patients for natural solutions and find creative ways of working with your body’s needs.
