I have been using Crest Pro Health on my porcelain veneers for the last four days. These are new veneers. I just found out that I am not supposed to use that with veneers. Did I damage my new veneers. Is there anything I can do to fix any of the damage I did?
Everett
Dear Everett,
I’m glad you wrote. You can take a deep breath. While it is true that you should not use Crest Pro Health with porcelain veneers, the damage is cumulative. You will not have done any real damage in the short time you’ve used them.
Be aware that you also want to avoid any over the counter teeth whitening toothpastes. These use abrasives that will also damage the enamel of your teeth. I’m concerned that your dentist has not given you any instructions about post-procedural care. It makes me worry that he hasn’t trained his staff about the care and maintenance either.
The one toothpaste that I would recommend for any type of cosmetic work, is to use Supersmile Toothpaste. This uses a chemical enzyme to clean your teeth in a gentle way, while removing any surface stains in a safe way.
I’m also going to bring up what to be careful about during your your cleanings and checkups. Do NOT allow your dental hygienist use any acidulated fluoride or anything like a power prophy jet during your cleaning. These will remove the glaze on your porcelain veneers. The glaze is what protects them and keeps them from picking up stains.
If that is damaged, your porcelain veneers will quickly start to pick up stains and you’ll no longer love the way they look. Don’t feel even a little bit guilty or weird about asking your hygienist what they’re using. You invested a lot of money in your smile makeover.
