I had quite a few dental implants placed. I’m in the middle of the stage where I wait for the bone to integrate with the implants. Now, I have received a notice that my dentist has lost his license. What do I do? I’m assuming he cannot finish the procedure and he’s the only dentist in the office. No one there seems to have an answer for me yet. I get that they’re in turmoil and probably worried about their own employment, but I need a solution. I don’t know why he lost his license. Also, I prepaid for all of the work.

Dear Andrew,

I’m glad you wrote. I imagine you are feeling incredibly stressed right now. The dentist is going to need a new source of income so I feel fairly confident that he will sell his practice. If he does, that sale should include the contracts of incomplete work for his patients. Now, I would check the dental implant qualifications of the dentist who takes over. Placing dental implants is an advanced procedure which requires extensive post doctoral training.
Because you don’t know why he lost his license, it might not hurt to get your dental implants checked out by an expert just to make sure that they are okay. Again, you’ll want an expert implant dentist to do this. Look for someone who is a Fellow with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. These dentists have the most expertise.
If the implants themselves are okay, you can either wait until your previous dentist’s office has a plan and make a decision then or you can ask for a refund on the unfinished portion and have the second opinion dentist complete the treatment. If the implants are not okay, then I would ask for a refund on the entire procedure, but you will need the word of the second dentist to back you up.
If the office won’t give you information, you can call the dental board. They must have encountered this before and may be able to help you.
