I have severe allergies to nickel, cobalt, and mercury. I can’t wear anything that has metal, including buckles, snaps, even clothing with metallic thread. I’d like to get a couple of dental implants but am worried the metallic posts will knock me out as a candidate. Is there a solution for people in my situation?
Mark
Dear Mark,
I think you can absolutely get dental implants if that is the only issue you have to deal with. Though you’ve mentioned several metal allergies, you should know that the dental implants are made from titanium. This particular metal is very biocompatible. It’s been used for medical procedures for years. Hip replacements are a good example.
You have a couple of options in this case. You can test to see if you have a problem with titanium. Or, if you want, there is a metal-free option for you.
There are metal-free dentists who will offer zirconia dental implants. Zirconia is known as ceramic steel. It is strong but without the metal.
Why Dental Implants are a Good Choice
It’s great that you’ve picked dental implants for your tooth replacement. They are the top of the line option. They are like having healthy, natural teeth back in your mouth again.
Another benefit is it will help prevent facial collapse. When your teeth are removed, your body interprets that as no longer needing to preserve the bone structure in order to hold the roots of your teeth. Having implants placed signals to your brain that you still need the bone.
